NDIS | Capacity Building Support Budget explained.

Individuals who require NDIS funding, find it quite confusing to manage their capacity-building support budget. Especially if they are self-managing their own funds.  Allocated across eight sub-categories, it is hard to understand using one category against another. As this budget, is not as flexible as compared to your Core Support Budget. You can choose how to spend these funds to purchase any approved individual support within its category, but won’t be able to move funding from one category to another.

The Capacity Building Support categories include:

Control and Choice:

A category to support participants for training in planning and plan management. For example, if you chose to engage with a plan manager or would like to self-manage your fund.  This category allows you to have a choice and control over your budget. However, as mentioned, in the Capacity Building Support categories, participants are unable to move funds from one category to another.

Daily Activity:

This category relates to activities such as therapies that aid participants to build their capacity towards a more independent living. For example, individuals requiring speech therapy or occupational therapy. A participant may require physiotherapy for back-related problems. Therefore, they chose to allocate their funding to physiotherapy. However, as time progresses, they chose to allocate it towards speech therapy as they require less physiotherapy (due to improved back condition).

Employment:

This category is associated with employment-related counselling and assessment. There are individuals who may need support with work-related stress, a new environment, building positive relations at the workplace. This provides individuals with the funding for improved support in their day to day life at work.

Health and Wellbeing:

Any medical professional advice required due to the impact of disability. This category, supports individuals with advice or consultation with health professionals, on a workout, diet-related advice. For example, the requirement of a fitness trainer for improved health and mental wellbeing.

Life-Long Learning:

A category to assist participants with their education. For example, graduating from university.

Relationships (Positive Behavioural Support):

This category ensures that individuals are provided with strategies to support positive behaviour and reducing behavioural concerns. This provides additional support towards maximising their participation in society.

Support Coordination:

There are participants, who require support coordinators to assist them in their day to day activities. Some participants may require full-time support; however, some may require part-time assistance. For example, individuals facing difficulties in walking may require part-time support.

Community and Social Participation:

This category involves the development and training of individual life skills. This includes public transport training, recreational and social participation.

These eight categories of capacity support building budget, enables individuals to focus on detailed and everyday aspects of life. The aim of the NDIS budget is to focus on every aspect of an individual participant, providing them complete support to live an improved life with choice and control.
